Our Dos and Don’ts of hat wearing for the Derby continues with these tips for the ladies:

One of the most important things to remember is that Derby style is about your hat. DO find a shape and a fiber (straw is traditional)  that goes with your personality, and tone down the ‘do for the day. A low ponytail, low side bun or, if you’re a pixie, just a few pin curls sticking out around the edges is best.

What to wear with that stellar hat? Something simple. DO think sleeveless, classic lines. Maybe a little A-line swing with a belt, or a traditional shift dress in a spring color. DON’T go all out for a big print. The flowers belong on your hat (fresh ones please), not on your dress.

The Derby is a time for standing still and looking like a lady. DO don the biggest brim you can and DON’T worry about that peripheral vision. This is the perfect opportunity to wear shoes that don’t walk well — you are there to be seen, so find the perfect spot and stay put.

DO remember that the Derby is a traditional affair. This is the time to bring out both your grandpa’s style and his manners. DO tip your hat to the ladies, hold the door open, and DON’T forget to mind your language as your favorite crosses the finish line.

DO think plaid, straw and linen. DON’T think wool. Even though it can be cold and rainy in the Rose City on the 5th of May, we are focused on Kentucky style. It’s summer fashion for the Derby, no matter the weather.
